Balvenie Distillery is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky distillery in Dufftown, Scotland and is owned by William Grant & Sons. William Grant was born on 19th December 1839 and at age seven, began herding cattle at a farm near the River Deveron. In the early years, he was apprenticed to be a shoemaker before jumping to a job as a clerk and finally a bookkeeper at Mortlach Distillery in 1866. He worked hard and was promoted to manager and thus began learning the distilling trade.
William Grant left his job at Mortlach Distillery after 20 years and bought a field near Balvenie Castle. He drew up plans for his distillery and the foundation stone was first laid in the autumn of 1886. In 1892, work began to convert an 18th-century mansion called Balvenie New House into a distillery. The building process took 15 months to complete and the first distillation took place at the Balvenie Distillery on 1st May 1893. Grant remained active in the company until his death in 1923 at age 83.
The Balvenie distillery initially provided fillings, primarily for the Grant’s Standfast blend, until 1973 when the first official bottling was made. Its continued requirements as a contributor to blends initially restricted its growth as a stand-alone brand. This was eased slightly with the opening of Kininvie Distillery in 1990, but it was only with the building of Ailsa Bay Distillery that greater single malt stocks were finally made available.
The Balvenie 14 Years Caribbean Cask is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky aged initially for 14 years in traditional oak casks before being finished in casks that previously held Caribbean rum. For an ideal finish, Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE fills the casks with his own blend of select West Indian rums. Bottled at 43% ABV.
